European Space Agency Partners with Redwire to Develop Robotic Arm Prototype for Argonaut Lunar Lander

27/05/2024

The European Space Agency (ESA) has enlisted the expertise of Redwire to spearhead the development of a cutting-edge robotic arm prototype for the Argonaut lunar lander, marking a significant stride in Europe's lunar exploration ambitions. The mission's overarching objective is to establish Europe's capability to successfully deliver 1,500-1,800 kg of cargo, vital infrastructure, and advanced scientific instruments to the lunar surface.

Introducing MANUS - A Game-Changing Robotic System

Dubbed MANUS - the Manipulator for Argonaut Payload Needs and Unloading Support, this innovative robotic system will be meticulously crafted in Luxembourg by the pioneering space infrastructure company. In tandem with Redwire's ongoing development of the STAARK robotic arm - a versatile and adaptable system tailored for diverse on-orbit applications - MANUS is poised to revolutionize lunar logistics operations. Its functionalities will encompass essential tasks such as offloading, precise object positioning, retrieval maneuvers, and seamless lander positioning.

Redwire's Path to Lunar Innovation

Redwire's dedication to lunar infrastructure projects is underscored by a rich portfolio of groundbreaking initiatives. Noteworthy accomplishments include securing a DARPA study contract to explore future commercial lunar infrastructure possibilities. The company is also championing the prototyping of cutting-edge technologies geared towards constructing essential lunar infrastructure like roads and landing pads. Through a substantial $12.9 million Tipping Point contract with NASA, Redwire is driving advancements in facilitating lunar surface operations.

Empowering Lunar Missions with Solar Power Solutions

Further amplifying its lunar technology prowess, Redwire is set to deploy its Roll-Out Solar Array (ROSA) technology for Astrobotic's Lunar Vertical Solar Array Technology (LVSAT) program. Designed to provide sustainable power solutions for lunar missions, LVSAT holds paramount significance in supporting upcoming lunar endeavors, commencing with NASA's esteemed Artemis program.

Through strategic collaborations and pioneering advancements, Redwire is spearheading a new era of innovation in lunar exploration, setting the stage for unparalleled strides in space exploration and celestial discoveries.
