Sharp Plans $3-5 Billion Investment for Display Fab in India

28/04/2024

Japanese company Sharp is making plans to invest a substantial amount, estimated to be between $3-5 billion, in establishing a cutting-edge display fab semiconductor factory in India. This initiative is significant as display fabs are integral to the production of televisions and various digital screens. According to a report in the Times of India, key representatives from Sharp recently held discussions with communication minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding this ambitious venture. It is noteworthy that the proposed facility in India is projected to cover an expansive 1,000-acre area, surpassing the size of its existing manufacturing plant in Japan.

The intended purpose of this ambitious endeavor is to leverage the Indian facility to not only meet the burgeoning domestic demand but also to facilitate exports. In pursuit of suitable locations for this facility, Sharp is actively engaging with the state governments of Telangana, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. If successfully realized, this investment by Sharp could significantly bolster the semiconductor manufacturing landscape in India, potentially positioning the country as a key player in the global semiconductor industry.
