AMD Introduces Spartan UltraScale+ FPGA Family: Power-efficient and Secure Solutions for Edge Applications

06/03/2024

AMD has unveiled its latest innovation, the Spartan UltraScale+ FPGA family, marking a significant milestone in its lineup of Cost-Optimised FPGAs and adaptive SoCs.

Spartan UltraScale+

The Spartan UltraScale+ family stands out with its impressive features, offering up to 572 I/Os and voltage support up to 3.3V. This capability facilitates seamless any-to-any connectivity, making it ideal for edge sensing and control applications.

Powered by a cutting-edge 16nm fabric and versatile packaging options starting as small as 10x10mm, these FPGAs deliver exceptional I/O density in an ultra-compact footprint. One of the noteworthy advantages of the Spartan UltraScale+ family is its up to 30% reduction in power consumption compared to its predecessor, the 28nm Artix 7 family. This energy efficiency is achieved through the integration of 16nm FinFET technology and hardened connectivity features.

For enhanced performance and future-proofing, these FPGAs are the first from AMD to feature a hardened LPDDR5 memory controller and PCIe Gen4 x8 support. This combination ensures not only power efficiency but also readiness for upcoming technological advancements. In terms of security, the Spartan UltraScale+ FPGAs offer a robust suite of features. Support for Post-Quantum Cryptography with NIST-approved algorithms fortifies the devices against evolving cyber threats. Moreover, a physical unclonable function assigns a unique fingerprint to each device, bolstering security measures.

The inclusion of PPK/SPK key support aids in managing obsolete or compromised security keys, while differential power analysis mechanisms guard against side-channel attacks. To further enhance security, a permanent tamper penalty is implemented to mitigate misuse risks. Designed to streamline the development process, all of AMD's FPGAs and adaptive SoCs in the Spartan UltraScale+ family are fully compatible with the Vivado Design Suite and Vitis Unified Software Platform. This integration enables hardware and software designers to maximize productivity by leveraging the tools and included IPs seamlessly through a unified designer cockpit.

In summary, AMD's Spartan UltraScale+ FPGA family sets a new standard in performance, efficiency, and security for edge applications, empowering developers to unlock new possibilities and stay ahead in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
