8650HD 65GHz 12bit Oscilloscope

06/09/2023

Teledyne LeCroy, a company specializing in measurement equipment, has recently revealed a new oscilloscope with impressive specifications. The 8650HD model is capable of operating two channels at 65GHz through 1.85mm 50Ω connectors, or four channels at 33GHz. This device is part of the 8000HD line of scopes, which includes six different models capable of up to 320Gsample/s (two channels) and up to 8Gpoint of acquisition memory. All models in the 8000HD family boast 12bit resolution at full bandwidth, with the four-channel model capable of 160Gsample/s.

Teledyne LeCroy notes that serial data technologies are quickly increasing in speed, as evidenced by PCI Express 6.0 and USB4 specification v2.0, which deliver 64Gtransfer/s and 80Gbit/s, respectively, using multi-level pulse-amplitude-modulation [PAM] signals. As the complexity of serial data link operations continues to grow, the 12 bits of resolution offered by the oscilloscope proves exceptionally useful in characterizing signals such as PAM3 and PAM4, commonly used in USB4 v2.0 and PCIe 6.0. Additionally, the 8Gpoint capacity of the oscilloscope enhances the debugging of link negotiation problems.

The 8000HD family of oscilloscopes offers various options and features, including a 16Gbit/s or 8Gbit/s hardware serial trigger, low-speed serial trigger, and serial decode capabilities. The 2.5Gsample/s digital input allows for mixed-signal analysis with signals up to 500MHz, and there is also an external digital input for 3GHz data, which samples at 12.5G/s. The ProBus inputs can be set to either 50Ω or 1MΩ, while the ProAxial inputs are higher bandwidth 50Ω, and the ≥50GHz models are fitted with 1.85mm inputs.

Overall, the 8650HD and the 8000HD family of oscilloscopes provide impressive capabilities for measuring and analyzing high-speed serial data technologies.
